How it works in Toronto

The rules, in plain words.

How does winter parking work in Toronto?

Two winter rules: no parking on snow routes while the City declares a Major Snowstorm Condition, and no parking 2 to 6 AM from December 1 to March 31 in the former North York.

When does it apply?

Snow routes: fines up to $500 and a tow while a snowstorm is declared. North York ban: a $50 ticket, and the car can be towed. It has no signs.

What does a ticket cost?

A ticket is $50, and on some streets the car can be towed. The City's page ↗

Can CURB remind me?

Yes. Tap your curb on the map, then turn on alerts. Alerts and calendar reminders run on Toronto time: a North York ban night gets one alert around 9 PM the evening before, and a snow route gets one alert when the City declares a Major Snowstorm Condition. On iPhone, add the map to your Home Screen first.

Is CURB free?

Yes. Free, with no account and no ads, and open source on GitHub. CURB started in San Francisco; the Toronto map is built on the City's open data.

The receipts

Where the data comes from

Snow routes come from the City's traffic and parking by-law (Chapter 950, Schedule XVII-A), placed on the Toronto Centreline. The North York ban covers every City street in the former City of North York, except the parts Council took off Schedule IV. The posted sign always wins: temporary signs override everything here.
