How it works in Unincorporated LA County

The rules, in plain words.

How does street sweeping work in Unincorporated LA County?

Posted streets are swept once a week, on the day and in the hours on the sign, one curb at a time: each side of a street has its own sign.

When does it apply?

All year. On County holidays the sweeper skips, but the Sheriff still tickets during posted hours. About $60, no tow.

What does a ticket cost?

A ticket is $60, with no tow. $50 civil penalty for failure to obey signs (County Code 15.20.070, under which the Sheriff writes street sweeping tickets) plus $10 of court assessments (15.200.020). The County's page ↗

Can CURB remind me?

Yes. Tap your curb on the map, then Sweep alerts: a push the evening before and 30 minutes before it starts, on Unincorporated LA County time, or put it in your calendar. An overnight sweep gets one alert around 9 PM the evening before. On iPhone, add the map to your Home Screen first.

Is CURB free?

Yes. Free, with no account and no ads, and open source on GitHub. CURB started in San Francisco; the Unincorporated LA County map is built on the County's open data.

Holidays

CURB keeps the rules on these days too, to be safe. The posted sign has the final word.

Where the data comes from

Days and hours are Public Works' street sweeping map, which draws each curb as its own line; CURB laid each posted curb on the County's street centerline on the side it runs along. Streets without sweeping signs (16,685 of the map's lines) are left out: nobody is ticketed there. The posted sign always wins: temporary signs and holidays override everything here.
